For the first time in a decade, I have added a new "platform" section to
my hpcalc.org site -- Other Calculators.
Almost since the beginning of the site, I have had programs that are
related to other HP calculators in the listings. Because hpcalc.org was
originally, for its first year, hp48.ml.org, and was exclusively for the
48 at that time, these items all ended up in the 48 section. As time
passed and additional platform sections were added, first for the 38 and
28 in 1998, then for the 49 in 1999 and the 39/40 in 2000, and finally
the Prime in 2013, these "other" programs remained in the 48 section,
and I even gradually added some more over time.
However, this has not been a good solution. These are generally
emulators and simulators for older HP calculators, with the vast
majority being related to popular programmable models like the 42S, 41
series, 71, 75, and Voyager series, and have nothing to do with the 48.
After some debate of whether to make more sections for additional
platforms, I decided to just make a single new section called "Others"
for anything not related to the graphing models. My site's focus has
always been graphing models, with minimal material for others, so I
think grouping all non-graphing downloads into one section makes sense,
and making this a place for things like simulators and emulators to help
introduce the users of graphing calculators to other models. For
programs specific to other models, there are other better sites like
hp41.org -- I do not want to take the time to maintain traditional
program listings for other models.
This also made it easier for me over the last few days to add a number
of downloads related to these other models that I had previously been
hesitant to add.
Presently I only have one category under the "Other" platform, for
PC-related downloads. This includes emulators, simulators, link
software, and development tools. At a later date I might add additional
sections as necessary, but this is sufficient for now. There are now
186 files in this new "other/pc" category, the vast majority which
previously resided in the "hp48/pc/emulators" category.
