Hello ,

I tried to transfer some programs from HP 50G to HP 48G and vice-versa, but it doesn't work. Unfortunately i dont have the transfer cable . Is there any trick to transfer wirelessly from a 50G to a 48 ?

Many thanks for your replies .

No, not really. The HP50G uses the IrDA protocol (except for printing to
the IR printer) whereas the 48G uses a proprietary HP protocol.

There isn't a transfer cable either - not from 50G to 48G.

For transferring programs, easiest is probably to use the SD card or USB
cable to transfer your programs from the 50G to a PC; and then use the
48G serial cable combined with a USB<->serial converter to transfer from
the PC to the 48G.

If you search this group for "hp50 hp48 transfer" you will find a few suggestions. The short answer is that it probably won't work via IR. There was one comment which I found dubious, that the IR wavelengths are different and that's why it wouldn't work. I use my 50g to communicate with a HP IR printer just as I did with the 48 and threr is no problem; I suspect ht has to do with come internals of the protocol.
Note (as also mentioned in some of the other posts) that there are some significant differences between the firmware. Any program which relies on system entry points (i.e., sys RPL or lower-level) will probably fail and cause a crash. Most user RPL programs will be OK, but when I migrated from my trusty HP48GX (I think it was) to 50g I found that there were enough new commands (reserved words) that a small number of my programs wouldn't work; I had to do some hand tweaking, renaming variables and such. Likewise, some 50g programs will fail on the 48 for the same reasons.

Seek and ye shall find -- I haven't tried this, but it might just work:

Of course, the problem may be that it would receive from the 50 (IIRDA protocol), but you don't need that since you can always get data in or out of the 50 via its SD card. Anyway, depending on how handy you are, you might be able to kludge somethng together. Simpler to just buy a cable, of course ;-).

There is an RS-232 serial port on the HP50G that allows you to connect it to the HP 48's (SX / S / G / GX / G +).

HP has never supplied or sold the cable to this 50G port.

Previously this cable was sold at HPCalc.org
Http://commerce.hpcalc.org/serialcable.php

And also Samson Cables
Http://www.samsoncables.com/catalog/prodDetail.cfm?Prod_ID=391&Sku=50GRS232

But it now appears to be no longer available on those sites.
